    Default S & W revolver, model 17-4 cylinder lock

I just finished working on a friend's 6" barrel, Smith revolver, 22, cylinder lock replacement. When I received the firearm the cylinder lock would not function properly. I've replaced the cylinder lock/stop and checked all components. Now...the cylinder does rotate into place properly (counter clockwise) and locks. BUT it can be rotated by hand in a clockwise direction! Am I just not used to working on a model 17-4? Anyone out there have an idea of why the cylinder will still rotate clockwise?

Note: the new cylinder lock is correct dimensionally and assembled properly. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like the bolt is not engaging deeply enough.

The cylinder stop notch has a high wall and a low wall. The bolt is engaging the high wall, but is not engaging the lower wall formed where the clearance ramp ends.

From the description of the attempted repair, if the bolt is correct and its spring system is sound, I would ask are the slots peened?

Also, I would question the alignment. Do you have range rods?

You don’t really say what it wasn’t doing nor what exactly you did and cylinder stop isn’t cylinder lock. Is the stop narrow enough to fit all the way into the cylinder notch? Does the hand spring doing it’s job or is it misplaced? Hands wear stars wear, cylinder stop springs break, stop windows wear. Details and pictures are needed.

Anyone know if Sgt Steve is OK? He hasn't been on since he was trying to repair that revolver on April 28th. Worried about that guy.
