Ruger LCR 357 carry ammo
I picked up a LCR in 357 and I plan on carrying it with 357 loads. I'm new to revolver loads and would like your advice. I tend to carry heavy grains in my semi autos but I dont know how that would crossover to a super small pocket cannon like this.
If you have a LCR in 357 what do you carry?

Re: Ruger LCR 357 carry ammo
It depends on barrel length. 357 loads are wasted in a short barrel so all you are doing is making more blast and recoil than effective use of powder. I used to have a couple 3 in barrel revolvers which I would consider minimum for 357. Get a couple different loads and see which one you can shoot well and are comfortable with.
The best load for you is the one you can consistently hit with. What works for me may or may not work for you.Illegitimus non carborundum est

FWIW: https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/rev...llistics-test/
They break down 2" and 4" barrel differences.
Not wanting to start a discussion on factory vs handloads, but I choose to use handloads to duplicate the "FBI" load 38 +p.Last edited by cephas; April 1st, 2019 at 05:58 PM.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Re: Ruger LCR 357 carry ammo
It has been a while since I looked this over. That Rem 158 gr sjhp load looks pretty good out of a 2" barrel. Not a terrible price either. I'll bet its a handful in an LCR.
Right now I have the Barnes 125gr xpd in my 2.75" K frame, and Rem 125gr sjhp in my 4" L frame. They have the Remington load at Walmart for about 55¢ per round, after tax. Nice for practicing. Pretty damned hot stuff.

Re: Ruger LCR 357 carry ammo
I can tell you this: My 33.5oz model 66-8 is a handful with the Barnes 125gr load. It is managable, but it is stout.
I don't know if I want to know what it is like in a 17.5oz LCR. I'm also skeptical if you're getting much performance out of the 1.8" barrel of an LCR, unless we are talking about the 3" LCRX, which is probably still rough at 21oz.

Re: Ruger LCR 357 carry ammo
I question his comparison because he is comparing a 1 7/8 inch 38 with a 2 1/4 inch 357 which is 18% longer. You will get more velocity from a 357 because you are burning more powder, but when you take the blast and recoil into the equation are you getting what you want?

Re: Ruger LCR 357 carry ammo
He's getting 400fps more. That's a ton, I doubt that minor difference in barrel length would equate to even 100 fps. Even if it does, that's still a lot faster. It's way easier to get reliable bullet expansion at faster velocities. That's the main thing I want. Blast doesn't matter to me in a "get off me" type gun and recoil is subjective. I will say that it isn't pleasent shooting .357's out of the LCR for long periods and I usually practice with it with.38's.

The Gold Dot 135gr+P short barrel .38 special load could be worth your consideration, if you do decide to go with a .38+P.
