Are pistol caliber carbines legally considered long guns?

Hey guys. Once again, I am 18 and I wanna purchase a carbine that chambers in 9mm. Wanted to check the legality of that and whether or not it would have to go to a FFL.

Caliber isn't a determining factor for whether or not its a rifle or pistol. Barrel length and Overall length determine that.

As stated above, just get a 9mm rifle like the Ruger PC Carbine and you're good to go. The only issue you may have is you must be 21 to purchase pistol ammunition, so some places may not sell to you claiming to be using 9mm ammunition in a rifle (Walmart for example).

However it's totally legal to buy the ammunition for use in your rifle. And many places will recognize that pistol caliber carbines have become very popular and shouldn't give you an issue.

If you're looking for one used you can transfer from a PA resident without going through an FFL.

You may have (logistical, not legal) trouble buying ammo for a PCC, even though it's legal for you to purchase the PCC itself.

Federal law says that it's not legal for an FFL to sell ammo that isn't for a rifle or shotgun to someone who's 18. Now, the way I interpret it is, since the ammo you're going to buy IS for a rifle, it's legal for them to sell you the ammo (regardless of whether or not it was originally designed for pistols or not). Some stores, however, might not see it that way, and might not sell you 9mm until you're 21, even though you're using it in a rifle.

The way I see it, it's a good excuse to also enter the hobby of reloading :P
