Re: U.S. Rifle Cal .30 M1
I've had my CMP M1 for a few years and enjoyed shooting it but finding my local CMP match earlier this year was the best experience I have had with it. Shooting it on the line with others and getting some tips from old school M1 a shooters was a blast. I really suggest you find your local CMP match and get out and shoot on the line with others. The match I went to was really great for first time participants, hopefully your experience goes the same.

Re: U.S. Rifle Cal .30 M1
Make sure you are shooting the correct ammo in the Garand.
Over the counter 30-06 ammo is not loaded with the correct powder and as such the burn rate can damage the op rods.
Loaded ammo must be done so using IMR 4895 or IMR 4064 only. IMR 4895 was developed specifically for the M1 Garand ammo.
I have two WWII Garands. Both of which are nearly correct. My 11/43 has a VAR barrel but it shoots so well that I never bothered to try and find the correct barrel.
I also have a 3/42 (six digit serial number) that has everything except the correct elevation knob. It was probably not financially wise to use correct parts, but I like it that way.
Neither has a cartouche left. If you find a Garand with a correct cartouche, it is likely a fake. Buy carefully. Cartouche stamps can be had on Ebay. Heat and stamp into the stock and now you have one...

Making a Garand correct can lead you down a very expensive rabbit hole. Very much so if it's a Winchester. A stock and barrel will set you back $4-500......each.

If you can't find military ammo, try the CMP.

I see a bunch of the Greek stuff (HXP) on sites. Good ammo. I went through a couple of Spam cans and saved the caes which I now reload with IMR4895 and 165 flat base spitzers.
Even though I reload, I never have had problem finding correct ammo for the Garand.
