I once tried to drop a large serrated kitchen knife when I was a kid while emptying the dishwasher. After missing and it hitting my bare foot tip down, I never tried to catch a dropped knife again.

Well I do let the sharp or really heavy shit fall. I don't even wear steel tipped boots and haven't broken any toes yet. My feet are too wide for the cap, it winds up beween my pinky toe and my ring toe.

So how did either of you actually TRAIN to not catch falling tools ?

Serious answer:

I grabbed a couple of less-dangerous tools in my youth, and that was enough.

I realized the potential dangers and did a lot of "what if" visualization. I've had screwdrivers drop straight down, but my feet weren't there anymore - I was a foot back in surrender position. It *is* possible to train your brain to the point of creating "muscle memory" without involving the body in the training. Just the thought of dropping a grinder or router with the trigger locked can provide an hellacious amount of incentive to get it right.
