    Default Scope adjustment question...

So, my FIL (lives in MD) purchased a Leupold VXII scope from Cabelas over the weekend and had them mount and bore sight it while he waited. He had them use the Weaver 1" rings on his Remington 7400. First time shooting it today and he said it was about 3-1/2 inches low from zero at 65 yds. Windage was good, but elevation is low. Problem is, the scope is out of adjustment range. He can't adjust the scope anymore to bring the POI up to zero. They used these rings in medium configuration:

Did the Cabelas tech choose the wrong rings for this combination or was the scope initially mounted wrong?

    Suggestions please.

    Thanks.

id say its not mounted correctly (probable)
being out of elevation at 65yards is nuts

Well....not exactly. Depending on the heighth of the rings listed, that can happen. If the rings are high above the bore, the gun will still be low at 50-60 yards. It may zero at 100. A zero at 65 may well be high by the same variance at 100.

You want the lowest rings you can have to clear the bell of the scope. What is the space between the bore and the centerline of the scope?

You can buy down elevation rings if you really need a 50 yard zero with that scope.

heres what i would do stevie...i would loosen the screws that are on the scope rings, not too much but enough to where the scope can then move, then get the scope lined up how you want it and tighten the screws (the ones that put the pressure on the scope) and equal number of times, if you tighten one more than the other you sometimes run into that problem of running out of adjustments and if that does work i would take the rings to my gunsmith and tell him whats going on and he'll just grind the scope rings a couple thousandths and that will do the trick, but if your gunsmith is gonna cost more the new scope rings well, id get new rings

Thanks guys. I wish I had this rifle with me, but it is my father-in-laws rifle. I don't know the bore to scope centerline spacing. His 7400 is chambered in 30-06. Crazy thing is it was almost a foot low at 65 yards, when he first shot it. Then he adjusted the scope to bring it up to where it is approx 3-1/2 inches low... with no more adjustment on the scope. I don't know the clearance between the scope and the barrel. I will give him a call tonight and try and get these things figured out.

    Thanks!!!

For whatever reason the front end of the scope seems to be sitting higher then it needs to be.

Can we assume that a Weaver type single piece No. 93 base was used for the Weaver rings to sit on?

That's a good question. My FIL had the other scope (Bushnell) installed about 15 years ago, and I have no idea what bases were used. Whatever they are, he kept them. So, we will have to check that out too.

    Thanks!!!
