Default What can you tell me about these?

My wife's grandfather passed away and he was a national ranked shooter in the army at one point in time. He left me all of his shooting supplies and weapons. I am going through 2 pick up truck beds full of stuff when I came across these. I was sorting through thousands of still new Sierra match king bullet tips of all sorts of different grains when I noticed one box felt really light. When I opened the box these bullets were in there. What can you tell me about them? Sorry about the pic size I cannot figure out how to make it smaller

Probly an award. With the hole drilled in the case they might have been made to be worn on or as a necklace. Or just something he bought at a gun show. Who dosent like chrome ?

The primers on all the rifle rounds are not struck but there is a hole drilled in the primer of the pistol round. I just think that they are kinda neat. I have so much stuff to go through. I am going to end up having to sell some of it just because of storing it all.

    That photo is great!

I once had access to small object plating at a place of employment. Maybe he or an acquaintance did it. I think the bodies of the (30-06?) rounds were drilled for two reasons...let the powder out, and to signal that they are dummy rounds. Also, as suggested, the holes allow installation of a key chain or necklace. The drilled .45ACP is interesting. I can't figure anyone risking drilling a primer. Maybe it was a fail to fire and they felt safe doing it.

I'm guessing they had a special meaning to her grandfather. I'd try to figure out what that might be. Was he in WWII? If so, where and how?

There is "Trench Art" from the war. They often had many days of nothing happening. They would make jewelry from tail light lenses, and other things. Ash trays from Howitzer and cartridge cases. They were able to solder brass. I have an ash tray made of a cut-off artillery shell, pieces of brass, adorned with .45s around the rim, and rising from the center a P-38 from '06 cartridges and hammered brass to form the wings.

Maybe someone figured out how to chrome plate things.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

They are dummies. Chrome for identification as well as hole.

I'm with Gunsnwater here. Dummies are often made as exemplars to set up or reset reloading equipment or to test the action on firearms. They should be marked for caliber or have headstamp intact.
