    Default Shooting glasses

I need prescription glasses for shooting and I know I can't be the only one. I'm nearsighted but getting older and starting to have to hold things at arms length to read them. Just curious how you guys who wear glasses to shoot went about getting the right prescription? I've seen glasses that are progressive with the close/mid/distance portions rearranged and others that have different scrips for each eye. I don't know if I need all that but then again I don't know what I need or what's out there. I had an eye exam yesterday but the optometrist was no help at all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My eyeglasses are fairly small and I just wear safety glasses over them. I don't shoot for competition though so you'd have a hard time convincing me to spend $$$ on prescription safety glasses.

I would just have my regular prescription lenses made with polycarbonate but the normal progressive layout doesn't work at all for shooting. You have to lay your head back too much for pistol shooting and for rifle and shotgun, with your cheek on the stock you wind up looking through the top of the lens. That's for distance correction and is no good for focusing on the front sight.

Check out SSP Eyewear. They have lots of options for safety glasses. They have 'over' glasses and what I use is glasses with a built-in top focal magnifier. Otherwise the front sight is a blur.

^ Just got my SSP focals, and loving them so far.

*I wear reading glasses so I don't know how this applies to prescription

Try some cheap "Reading" glasses. They start at 1.25 and go up. All that I need is to get the front and rear sights in focus. The target seems to stay sharp for me. It helps me with scope, too. I don't wear regular glasses. I've been doing that for years and I think I'm currently using 1.50. YMMV

Currently I am using ESS ICE glasses with a Rx insert. The insert has the right lens focal point set at appx 21" (distance to the front sight) and the left lens set for distance. Works OK, but takes some getting used to for the first 10 minutes or so that you have them on.

My everyday glasses are Varilux Progressives - which I have worn for probably the last 20 years or so - well adapted to Progressives and like them. Eyes are definitely changing (68 this Saturday) so I have an appointment with my ophthalmologist next month and once I have my new prescription in hand, I intend to get a pair of Progressive shooting glasses from this company...

They have been great to work with so far, but not very far into the process.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

    Adios,
