Another squid here. We had M-14's aboard my ship and had practice for ship boarding. Anyway, first choose a gun that you feel fits your hand and then take an NRA pistol course. Make sure you apply for your License To Carry a Firearm through your County Sheriff.

Adams County Sport Handgunners Association usually offers the NRA basic pistol course in the spring/early summer. I've taken the basic safety + the self defence in the home. They do a good job, have enough instructors and are very thorough. About 25 miles NE for you.
