Re: Pennsylvania Long Rifle
Hawk I'd say you pretty much nailed it. I do War of 1812 reenactment. Much of the mythology of the long rifle is wrong. The Pennsylvania Rifle was really in its earliest incarnation during the Revolution. Most of the long rifles lore really is more Golden Era (c. 1780-1820).
Using Track of the Wolf as your general guide look at the following:
Isaac Haines and John Bivens are typical examples of the early rifles. Flat buttplates, swamped barrels (but not always) and Germanic locks with pointed tails (round locks are post 1800). The French Fusil de Chasse is actually a really good example as well. These French muskets (some were rifled) are really pretty and really period for all the early eras.

Re: Pennsylvania Long Rifle
I had a Thompson Center factory flintlock that was great. Pretty accurate, took deer with it.
A guy my wife knew needed money and offered me a CVA kit for a decent price. I put it together, Plum-browned the barrel (came out nice). It was over-all smaller and shorter than the TC, and it liked it better as a carry rifle, BUT....its lock, made in Spain, was a POS.
It used a down-sized factory "flint". Not much else worked, and even the factory flint wouldn't behave. The jaws were just too small, and the screw too coarse. So I'd say stay away from any CVA that doesn't have a decent lock. There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Look at their Kentucky line from traditions. I have one in percussion and flintlock.
