Quick question on this, I saw one box call say no chalk is required however it is still made out of wood. That doesn't sound right does it? Seems like they would all need chlak where surfaces contact?

Also for a glass pan call, no conditioning required as you really can't scuff up glass? What about the striker?

When I was a kid my neighbor’s dad made box calls. Still have ours. The son is now a reading cop, Jeff Par. Good people.

I'll be a first time turkey hunter this spring as well. I just purchased the Raspy Old Hen call from Amazon for $5. Figured I couldn't go wrong for the price. Plus the name cracks me up.

The HS Strut Raspy Old Hen is my favorite call. Usually, I buy it in a 3 pack with 2 other two-reed calls from most any retailer. Two-reed calls are the sweet spot IMO, single-reed aren't raspy enough and anything more than 2 is a waste.

This could be a P.S. to my last post, you will most likely only get 1 really good Spring season out of a mouth diaghram call, however, do not throw your used calls out. The 2 main calls used in Fall turkey hunting are the "kee-kee" and the "kee-kee-run" calls, these are high pitches, plaintive "I'm lost, where is everybody!" calls used by younger turkeys to find their flock mates. Using your higher pitched "worn out" mouth calls works well for these calls and the addition of a fresh raspy call to mimic the calls of the flock matriarch can be very effective.

Read up on Fall turkey hunting strategies, as they differ from Spring gobbler strategies.

Waterproof Wizzard....it works well. A black friction material is on the lid's contact surface making the wood sides sing.

I get years and years from my mouth calls. I do wash them off at the end of the day and store them in the fridge.

Now you know I will bug the heck out of you all when I am trying something new, sorry. So, for me the beginner, any advice on a call starter kit or where to begin on buying a few calls? I see so much out there but I know you all will distill it down for me. Thanks!

Custom call makers like David Hallaran, Hooks custom calls, Matt Van Cise will offer extremely high quality calls. I cut my teeth on the cheapest Amazon and Walmart calls I could get my hands on. Now I collect calls and look at them as instruments.

Do you needs expensive calls to kill thunder chickens, absolutely not. Learn to master one call type at a time. I recommend starting with a box call, then moving to pot calls, then to diaphrams. After all that, you can go to tube calls, trumpets, and scratch boxes but I wouldn't start with those.

Don't overlook a good push button or push pin call. They kill birds like crazy and are very easy to learn on.
