Nicely done that you got it on the way to running.
I'm going to defer to the experts and spectate the rest of the fine tuning.

If they're the same as the R.I. barrel I looked at this afternoon, 40.00 is no bargain.

By popped primers do you mean the primer ruptured and released gas?

To me these pictures look like very low pressure reloads using beat brass...........A firing pin always leaves a big dent. But the pressure from the boom should flatten it back out some. The usual problem you see it craters from overpessure rounds where the primer becomes too flattened and can even crater. Your loads are so low pressure the dent in your case doesn't move.

If they ruptured you might have a rough spot on your firing pin. Buff the tip VERY lightly to polish it. DO NOT change the length or contour.

And fire a box or two of factory loads thru it. Your problem might be something as simpe like short stroking.

I bench checked and test fired the gun today- nice meeting you and your wife, B30.
The issue is the barrel is over fit and the firing pin is not hitting dead center.

The cure is a new barrel, link and bushing properly fit. Way too much money for this side project.
The centering could be adjusted to a degree with an off dimension link- but it's not really that bad given the rest of the pistol.

The rounded off locking lugs in combination with the weak recoil spring are causing the gun to open just a little early.
There is evidence not seen in the photo indicating the firing pin is dragging across the primer- evidence timing is a little off. A new 18# spring will ease that a bit.

All in all, when he replaces the overfit thumb lock and recoil spring the gun is safe to shoot.

Free gun. Barrel, bushing and link is cheap experience of fitting a 1911. Just my opinion and how I look at it.

    .
i probably should have explained that further. what i meant was, i removed the bullet and powder and popped the primers in the gun on a handful of rounds to use as dummy rounds when cycling the gun.

we sincerely appreciate your help and the time you took to look over the pistol. we had a great time up there hanging around the shop and enjoy every chance we get to get out of the city! i have the spring and thumb safety in the mail then its one more shot at a quick polish and then this project gets a fork stuck in it!
