    The grips are worth cleaning up and if you don't like them sell or trade them. How did this poor wretch of a pistol end up like this in the 1st place?

    Personally once I was able to disassemble it into the ultra sonic then degreaser it would go. Then the big parts get blasted and finished in black oxide and any internals to far gone along with all springs get replaced and fitted.

    Good luck, can't wait to see the end results.

    i was going to reply but my brain wondered. no real story. it belonged to my wifes father and when he died her sister got it and now she got it and now im here working on it lol

    I have a similar era Rock island with the heavy roll mark; it rusted up sitting in a leather holster for 3 months.

    Not saying there might not be more to the story, but the heavy roll mark rock islands like to suck up water

    I would use elextrolytic derusting.

    It won't hurt the good metal .like acids.

    Don't bang on it until last resort.

    spent the last 4 days soaking in Vinager but as you can see theres still work to be done. Time for a plan B.

    I’m going to strip it down tomorrow to see what the inside looks like. Worst case I replace all of the small parts and then send the slide and frame out to be refinished.
