    Default Browning 81 BLR .308

    Hello,

    My dad passed away and left me a few guns. I'm a girl and don't know anything about these guns. I am very interested in learning what year the Browning rifle in but all of my research has been in vain. For example, all of the information I can find states serial numbers begin with 01001... My serial number is 10827PY227. So guys, anyone with knowledge about this rifle?

    I'm a guy and I don't know anything about those guns. Don't let "I'm a girl" have anything to do with your level of knowledge about, or your potential future enjoyment with, your new guns.

    Sgt. K,
    Thank you for welcoming me to the group. I agree with your statement about not letting my gender impact my level of knowledge about guns. I'm sure there are plenty of girls out there with extensive knowledge and/or experience with guns, I just don't happen to be one of them. However, I'm simply trying to find out what year the rifle might be or have someone point me in the right direction to find that information myself, as rellisonii did.

    Rellisonii,

    Thank you for the manual. I had read through it prior to posting and only noticed the short paragraph on page 10 regarding serial numbers. Have I missed something? Any other help is greatly appreciated!

    I can tell you that a BLR made in 1982 is a fine rifle. I wish I had one.

    For the serial number you wrote
    information I can find states serial numbers begin with 01001, so that means the first gun built every year is
    01001xxyyy where xx is year built, and yyy is the model, so your rifle serial broke down is
    10827 - 01001 is the 9826 rifle made in PY 1987 and model 227 which is short action model 81.

    https://www.browning.com/support/dat...ion-rifle.html

    In 1975 Browning standardized its serial number identification which it followed until 1998. The Model 81 BLR was introduced in 1981. The Lightning BLR was introduced in 1995.
    1. Serial Number
    beginning with 01001
    at the start of each year.
    2. Date of Manufacture
    is a two digit code
    Z=1
    Y=2
    X=3
    W=4
    V=5
    T=6
    R=7
    P=8
    N=9
    M=0
    3. BLR Type 127=BLR Lever Action
    327=Model 81 BLR Long Action
    227=Model 81 BLR Short Action

    rellisonii,

    I saw this but didn't think it applied to my serial number but I see exactly what it means now that you explained it. 1982 - py; 227: model 81 BLR short action.

    Thank you again!
