Re: Slide Release or Rack It?
When you insert a clip into the magazine of an M-1 Garand and push it to the stop the bolt release is actuated from it's stop.

Re: Slide Release or Rack It?
Full disclosure: I’ve fired lots of Garands and am no expert (although, I am an expert marksman).
I don’t believe “that’s what makes it a clip”, although as Jenn posted you do release the bolt and chamber a round during this process.

Re: Slide Release or Rack It?
The M-1 Garand uses a eight round "en-bloc" clip which is inserted into the fixed magazine and expelled when empty. Much more common is the five round stripper clip used to load a magazine on or off the rifle.

Re: Slide Release or Rack It?
i think the "clip" is that it is nothing but a metal clip that holds rounds together for the purpose of loading a rifle.
although a money clip is also a strip of metal thats purpose is to hold money together ideally not for emptying all at once.
a magazine is designed to hold rounds and feed from the magazine.
most rifles, garands included, let you load magazines from clips.
full disclosure, i'm drinking.

Re: Slide Release or Rack It?
The slide release is definitely faster. I don't consider it fine motor. I guess the 1911/2011 safety could be considered fine motor but I haven't missed one of those at speed in over a decade and I've pulled some pretty quick draws. That being said, whatever works for you, works for you. There are rarely hard absolutes in what is "right".

Re: Slide Release or Rack It?
This video just popped into my feed, not sure why because it's old but I think it offers good closure to this topic for all involved.
If it doesn't because your so heavily invested in your narrow mindedness then there ain't shit no one can do for you on this and probably everything else you subscribe to as well.Join the GOA & save $5.00. https://www.gunowners.org/mac-subs-join-goa.htm

Re: Slide Release or Rack It?
I usually rack it for a few reasons, most of my guns have been smaller concealed carry guns with smaller slide locks/releases so it's easy for me to just grab the whole slide. The second reason is I'm in the habit of racking because that's also how you clear a malfunction, my head is always there when I've got to get a round in the chamber. Finally I don't 100% trust the empty mag hold open feature. The only reason we are having this conversation is because of a little metal tab has got to catch a little plastic nub on the mag follower, seems like a tenuous thing to train for, I've had that little nub break off or wear on a few mags.
That said, if you give me an AR15 I hit the bolt release almost exclusively.Last edited by ray h; February 11th, 2019 at 06:50 AM.

Re: Slide Release or Rack It?
My simple reasons to rack it - load from an empty gun (rack it) reload from an empty gun (rack it) malfunction (rack it) same same
