Were you wearing a MAGA hat, or a mighty shirt?

    FIFY.

But seriously, I think OP did fine. Someone unknown approached him in the dark, and OP asked him to stop. To that person's credit, he did stop, and just asked OP for a ride. OP calmly but firmly told him no, and the person left. Win all around. He was probably just some poor gambling addict.

I said stop there and reached under my shirt. He stopped and didn't do or say anything for a few seconds. Then he asked for a ride to the meadows casino, twice. I just said "no" both times, still with my hand on the handle. Then he just said "alright" and walked off in that direction.
This guy was looking for an easy mark.

Being assertive probably caused him to think again.

I think marinville did fine and I'm not going to pass judgement on leaving a car running at home. I will say that instances like this highlight the need for training on how to handle these situations. If you recall, I caught a a guy parked in my yard not too long ago who was shooting across the street at 9:30 on a Sunday night and he did not stop coming towards me when I told him to. It gets scary and real really fast. On that note I am off to my first home defense training class.
If it ain't broke it ain't mine.

I leave my vehicles run in the driveway, one, to warm them up, two, because FUCK liberals and their global warming/cooling idiocy!
I think the guy probably really was just looking for a ride to the casino. When he spotted you, or vice verse, he decided to ask for it. Prior to that point, I think he already had identified his ride to the casino, and you wrinkled his neat little plan.
Well done! I’d give you an A- (car running unlocked deducts points), and you did not say you were carrying a .45, so you lose points for carrying a girl-gun!

I had a 357 mag, but a Colt Wiley Clap CCO is on my wish list.

I guess I just don't want unnecessary police contact.
Perfect! Police don't want it either.

You did fine. No one expects shit like this, even though you 'should'. I agree you should have lit him up with the flashlight. It would give you a brief advantage to stun him and prepare your next move and inhibit a potential next move by him (maybe drawing a gun).

Glad it stopped where it did.

I can't say that I would have done anything different. You were at a place where you are very comfortable, therefore you were at "Condition Bored". It was dark out and the area is safe enough that you don't expect a lot of foot traffic at night or to have people walking up to you out of nowhere. Again, no reason to be on alert. I suppose some would say something about situational awareness, but be honest, how many of us walk around with constant vigilance? We all get caught up in our own thoughts occasionally. Which is why the guy gave you such a start. You were startled, but collected yourself well from the sound of it, and handled the situation well enough.

I won't even give you crap about leaving the car running. I don't do it as a general rule, not because I'm a lib NPC and believe it to cause global warming, but because I was raised not to do it since it's mostly wasteful to leave it running just to leave it running. Having said that, with the temps that we've been having, I've had to run the truck for awhile just to warm up the engine and clesr the windows from frost so I could see to drive. And I don't stay with the car, and I don't lock it, and I don't have remote starter.

Give yourself a pat on the back, be glad that nothing more transpired, and learn from it in case there's a "next time".

I see no problem with the actions of the OP. I think everyone has let a vehicle running at one time or another. The vehicle is what attracted the attention of the suspect. Putting a hand on a pistol and ordering someone to stop is no big deal. Its not like he put a laser on the guys forehead.
