Whatever legal claim you might have, if you stir the pot you may end your subcontractor status permanently.

While I'm a fan of hiring lawyers (we gotta eat), you also have to look at the big picture. If the chief makes a stink and your contract is terminated, then you'd have less to lose by asserting whatever civil rights claims (or other tort claims for being grabbed against your will) might exist.

Life is multi-layered, don't get tunnel vision. If you need to move a boulder and you ask a buddy who owns a bulldozer and another buddy who has some dynamite, they may provide very different solutions. Lawyers will tell you what you can sue for. They don't usually give career advice.
