    Default Beretta 92A1 Frame Checkering!

I only did halfway down the frontstrap because the outward curve is tough to do (I messed that up when I did it on my 92FS) and texture there makes no difference anyway. I think the contrast between the vertical and horizontal lines looks cool too. I didn't stop at the edges of the vertical lines, the horizontal cuts go all the way to the edge of the grips.

Nice. I just put some skateboard tape on my CMP gun.

Really nice work! I want to do the same with a couple of guns this year. Care to share what you did and/or what tools you used?

Well now, that’s nice. Do that for a year and I bet you could hang a shingle out and have full time work. How long have you been checkering? Did you start with wood?

I took the grips off, put the frame in my vise and used it as a level guide. Once you cut the first pass, you can take it out of the vise and do the rest by hand. I bought 20 and 30 line per inch files but ended up using the 20 LPI for this and my 92FS. The 30 LPI is fine for small parts like magazine releases but I think it would be too harsh for my wife's hands and the 92A1 is "her gun".

This is only the second gun I've done. I did my 92FS first and other than a deep mark where the frame curves out (which is one of the reasons I only did half of the frontstrap on the 92A1), it turned out pretty well. I'd need to gain a LOT more confidence to do this on other people's guns. I'll blast and blue other's barrels, slides, etc all day but I had to spend months convincing myself to go through with this. Permanent mods make me pretty nervous.

92FS with frame blasted, before checkering ....

Before I decided to cut all the way under the grips ...

After cutting all the way across. Notice the gouge where the frame curves out.

"I had to spend months convincing myself to go through with this. Permanent mods make me pretty nervous." I bet you did. Well it was a good effort. They use those pana-vices to hold the part in any orientation. Magnifying glasses and good light.

    That's just mind boggling.
I dunno how it's done, but that's impressive.
As an artist, I have always had an eye for "spacing" and "evenness" and when I look at that, nothing jumps out at me as being "uneven".

    Good work.
