    Default Bluing/blacking magazine baseplate?

Does anyone know a product that I can use to darken the bottom of a stainless steel (I think) mag baseplate? It's for a Sig p238 mag like the one pictured below:

The pistol itself has a dark finish (not blued, sort of a dark gray parkerized) but the baseplate is shiny as hell. When I pocket carry the Sig in my hospital scrubs (!!) the butt is very near the pocket opening and shines out like a beacon. I don't need to do the whole thing, just the bottom outside of the baseplate is all I need to darken. Any ideas? Don't want to simply use paint or anything else that will gum up the works.

    Thanks in advance!

I don't think it would hurt to try this. Stainless steel will not blue, so cold bluing products are a no go here.

DnF, I' familiar with the process of cold blueing and recommend any of the following products:

    Birchwood Casey
    Brownells Oxpho Blue
    Vans

Follow the instructions(also check out online videos) but in your case don't use 0000 steal wool since that will shine up the blueing and since you want a flat finish.

    Hope this helps,

    Kobsw

Maybe Plasti Dip or FlexiDip (parts store - used to spray color on auto wheels) spray?

Couldn't you use the base plate from another mag?

Just get some black touch up paint and brush it on the bottom. I wouldn't care if is shows, people shouldn't be looking in my pockets anyway... People are not that aware, especially non gun owners. They don't look everyone over with a fine tooth comb. If they see it for a fraction of a second, they will see a shiny something, it could be anything. If a gun owner saw it, he wouldn't care.

I don't understand how brushed-on paint would "gum up the works". But may I suggest...black electrical tape, applied, and trimmed with a razor blade?

Also suggest, remove plate, use it as a pattern, make another plate of a steel that can be blued.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Also along the lines of electrical tape... perhaps skateboard grip tape could work. Extra grippiness for super tacticool operating or something like that.

Yes. And the unwanted sharpness is easily reduced by rubbing two pieces together or running a file over it (before applied, of course).
