Re: AR receiver rough external finish
This is the one I'm leaning towards, using a non-aggressive copper fouling remover (Like Hoppes) and going over the area I hit with the bronze wool. If it pulls the copper residue off easily, then it's all good.
If this was a 15 receiver, I'd just drop the $40 and swap all the upper bits (if I even did that). Being an LR308, there's definitely a monetary and availability component to this exercise. Plus what else am I going to do when it's 2 degrees on Monday, right?

Re: AR receiver rough external finish
Test run, brass wool and Hoppes is the answer. Water and soap wouldn't carry away the scotchbrite or the steel wool, but a rag wet in Hoppes 9 wiped the brass residue right off.
In this picture there are no shadows, everything is in the same light. Upper left quadrant was buffed with brass wool until it turned copper colored, then wiped in Hoppes 9. Afterwards, ran a t-shirt patch pack and forth twice to check for lint deposit - everything you see is from a shirt back and forth twice, that's how rough the receiver is.
