Let me start with I am the northern Lehigh Valley. I will say the subject is "Be Aware of the differences".
Prepare for a culture shock, and visit the area more, with eyes open. There are going to be a boat load of things you take for granted where you're at now, that won't be available up there. I mean there are no bagels here, hell if you don't like Wonderbread, there is no bread to eat. A half dozen shops are smart enough to import amaroso rolls for their Hogies. And no, they are not steak and potatoes, they are boiled am and Tatertots. No good diners, and the chesesteaks are fair. Bad Chinese and bland pizza, how the hell you bland up a pizza I have no idea. They are good when they open up shop, but they get so many complaints, they eventually relent to the local palate. I remember going to a local butcher one Christmas looking for a Prime Rib, and they had to get the owner and he had to call around and special order it. No, not Kobe beef, just prime rib. What I'm saying is be aware, not beware, there are going to be a lot of differences, and a lot of them are no problem, some will get on your nerves. So make a good note of the things you do on a regular basis and when you go up there, try and find them. I mean the outdoors stuff is great, but if that's not your thing...... If you need the sports venues, you will be driving.
If you like and only eat Wonderbread, come to Allentown and enjoy the bagels I hate sports, so the fact that the iron pigs are here and that's it, is fairly positive even though they dominate the news cycle. And thank god for Amazon.
I think you drive for a living right, well, there is an entirely different world out there then what you learned on. I have lived in NJ, Chester, Montgomery, Dauphin and a few other places, and seamlessly fit right into the roads. I have been in the Lehigh Valley for two decades and am still dumfounded at the idiots on the road. Oh I know there are idiots everywhere, but drive around here a little They don’t know the car came with rear view mirrors.
I am not saying the Lehigh Valley is bad, it’s different for imports and the Honesdale area is different again. Just be aware of these things, and there are ways to enjoy where ever you go. I love the access to the woods, and the fact that insurance for 5 cars here is the same insurance as 2 in Pottstown. My electric bill’s cheaper, homeowners insurance, everything. Watch the school district taxes. There are some area’s like others mentioned the NY/NJ imports insist on more and more. Other areas have no imports, and some have not caught up yet. Of, fire and police, there may be none Some of the area use state police, and they’re always a good half hour away. Not bad, just different then Delaware county. I agree with the other recommendation, steer clear of the areas the New York flock too. They love the town, with no lights, no traffic signals, and now police. Then their son gets in an accident and “we need” street lights, traffic lights, and a police force.
Local trash collection, that’s another one, NO requirement for local pickup. So you go out to enjoy the chipmunks, turkey, bear and fox from the back yard deck, and then the neighbor fires up the burn barrel to dispose of all their plastic. Or someone dump their old TVs and trash bags on the side of the road in your yard. As soon as the weather breaks, and you open the house, the local obstinate farmer decides to spread pig shit in his filed and not till it in for a week.
All that to say, know what you want, and make sure the area has it.
    JD

Thanks for all that JD, as I've mentioned I am aware of a lot of that, and look forward to hearing the things I wasn't, that's the reason for the thread. I didn't really think about Wonder Bread, cheesesteaks, or pizza, but I get it. I know not far from the Lake Wallenpaupack Dike in Wilsonville there is a CVS pharmacy & IGA supermarket, the difference is about 20 minutes from where wifey's dad lived, compared to a couple in DELCO. I've been to Honesdale and they have places I'm familiar with as well, Home Depot, Walmart and the normal fast food joints, which pretty much taste the same everywhere.

I've spent a lot of time up there over the past 10 or so years and have noticed a lot of what you mention here. I realize there will be differences and am glad to read the thoughts of others. A week here and there is a lot different than year round, although I have spent time there all times 4 seasons of the year.

My real concerns are about the cost of living there, winters are colder & longer and heating isn't as good as what I'm used to in DELCO (have a boiler, natural gas vs everything else). Good info here about floodplains and slab foundations. Burning most trash is a good option, used to township pick-up here.

I know about the fire department, I have 3 within 5 minutes of home in DELCO, 15 minutes away up there in Tafton. I guess they don't save homes, just put out the ashes. In the 10 or so years I've been up there the only cops are state police and I've seen one maybe twice, Hawley has some I guess, I see the car parked in Rt 6 all the time.

Now if someone made a map of where the transplants live .....

I have to agree it depends how well you deal with transplants. I would assume being from the city it wouldn't be as noticeable.

If you want to move to the sticks, do it with full assimilation. You'll be happier that way. Trying to parse it between country and city living won't work. If you're into the action and busy way of life you may be better off with a vacation home.

Into, no, used to, yes. Vacation house. No, I want to get away from the busy, city life, but some of the things found in the city will be hard to do without, but not impossible. (I don't really live IN the city, but close enough).

I disagree with what JD says regarding food availability in NEPA. The Lehigh valley and Honesdale/Hawley are very different places, I've lived in both. And I'm originally from a large city, so I'm very particular about certain foods(pizza, bagels, Italian food, etc) and how I like them.

soberbyker, between Honesdale and Scranton 35 minutes away there's very few food items that can't be had in the area. I lived with my grandparents in Pike county and I've been in the Scranton area for 12 years now, everything's here you just need to know where to find it. I'm willing to share my vast fat-guy food knowledge with anyone who asks

How many hospitals? Don’t retire too far from help. Old sucks. Accessible is the adjective you want describing everything in a new retirement home. Steps will be your barrier and time also. Think about this. When your healthy you don’t notice things that will one day suck so bad. Snow removal is a good one.

You're all city folk to me. Rural living has a lot to offer. It's just different than what is "normal".
I wouldn't trade it for anything. Everything is work. Just a matter of what you want to spend your time doing.

Wayne Memorial in Honesdale. A couple urgent cares in Dunmore/Dickson City. Three hospitals (one a trauma center) in Scranton. At least one in Wilkes Barre. Specialists at Geisinger in Bloomsburg or go to Philly.

We looked at a bunch of houses and only found two that didn't have water issues. One we bought. Shallow soils and shallow bedrock cause water to stay near the surface. Most of Wayne, Pike, Monroe and eastern Lackawanna counties are poorly drained.
