Taurus 66. Great revolver, great price.

Both calibers would certainly get the job done. I would go with the .357 since the ammo is much cheaper and more available. 38 special is easy to find. Not so with 44 special.
I would also strongly recommend getting an older Smith and Wesson. The quality will be there. You could also go with a Ruger. They are solid and reliable.

Go to your local gun range and rent both of them and shoot both of them. See which one you'd rather have in your hand in the middle of the night with an intruder in the house.

PLEASE STOP SHOUTING... A .357 is going to do job, is a proven man-stopper, and a lot cheaper to train with (using mostly 38 specials and some .357 so you know what to expect if you load it up that way). Smith's are great guns, Rugers are great also, and built like tanks. For Ruger, I would recommend the GP100 6 shot - stay away from the SP101 (great gun, but a handful to shoot - especially for a beginner). Personally I have had bad experience with Taurus.

personally, I view 44 as using a sledgehammer to swat a fly. 357 will work just fine.

personally, I love the older model 686 revolver. the trigger is exquisite, and, accuracy is( for my experience) superb. plus, it balances well with a 4 inch, and, fits well in larger hands. recoil is more than manageable.

as to the shouting remark above, caps lock is viewed in most forums as shouting. we are a lot more easygoing, but, some forums will get wonky.

357. Look at the 7 and 8 shot models out now too. The Super Redhawk in it's 8 shot 357 guise would be a great night stand gun.

From the owner of 3 S&W revolvers, a model 19-3(now worth ~$800 - $900), a 686-5(~$600+), a S&W Ladysmith .357 model 60-9($?) all pre-lock AND, most recently a Ruger Security-six .357, 4" barrel, vintage 1980($405 otd, 2 months ago), go with a Security-six. I wanted something to carry while hunting in the Pocono Mts., where I've encountered many black bears, some reticent to give way during Spring turkey season. The Smiths have become too expensive for me to carry, so I decided to find a .357 that I wouldn't mind banging around if necessary and the Ruger is still a smoking deal and a hell of a well made pistol!
