I have always used Bird Shot in my HD shotgun.

When you really want to stop the threat, #4 alternated with slugs every other round for home defense.

If the bad guy is wearing a "bullet-proof" vest, I want him to go down and stay down...

The slugs also give you the opportunity to shoot through interior walls of your brick home without exposing yourself to return fire. You're obviously gonna need some spackle to patch the walls after the investigation, but it's a small price to pay for keeping your family safe...

    phil,

You asked a similar question a year or so ago. My advice remains the same. Hear is a cut and paste:

    phil,

    Yes. #4 high brass.

Need proof? Know of an old tree stump? Step back a couple paces and let her rip.

I don't think any home invader, hopped up or not, would not be stopped or retreat.

#4 Buck? Vietnam yes. Bedroom, not necessary.

    Just my .02 worth.

    Best wishes,
    fritz

You are worried that burglars might be wearing body armor? Watch the end of Scarface much?

If things are bad enough that I'm shooting someone invading my home, then I want to destroy the threat, not slow it or hurt it, I want it destroyed.
If my home is brick and I have no kids, then I'm going with 00 buck.
If I have kids or other collateral concerns then a shotgun is not the weapon of choice.

My shotgun would not be my first choice, but it's there.

Are correct. You can't take a deer at 30 yards with standard 4 shot (not buck). But you wont be defending yourself from a criminal at 30 yards either.

Even then, a hit with any shotgun (even with birdshot) at that distance will definitely make them stop and think.
Understood. My intent was not to say bird shot would not be useful as a home defense round, but to clarify the difference between what the OP asked and what the post I quoted was referring to if, as I prefaced my comment with, the poster was confusing #4 buck with #4 shot.

I know the difference. My point was that at home distances there is porbably not much functional difference between his 2 choices, and I offered a third option that the OP had not mentioned.

Exactly! Who here has a 25yd shot INSIDE their home? 25ft is more like it. Besides , if the perp doesn't die immediately , he'll probably bleed out by the time the ER docs pick all the birdshot out.
