    Default The .458 magnum

I love the Winchester .458 magnum caliber and have a Winchester pre 64 model 70 chambered for the big game caliber I also have a Ruger model 77 I bought about 30 years ago in the .458 so when ER Shaw offered the .458 barrel kit for the Savage 110 platform I couldn't resist building a Savage 110 into my favorite big bore caliber. With the help of a couple of my gunsmith friends I have her finished and she shoots very well.

Here are a couple pictures of the finished rifle.

Anyone else have a .458 they would like to share some pictures of?

That's one beautiful rifle. Do you reload for it too?

I like them too. The one on the left is a Winchester Model 70. The one on the right is a CZ Safari. I had issues with it feeding the short .458 Win Mag out of the long Box magazine so I reamed it out to .458 Lott. Problem solved.

I remember shooting your .458 Lott. Wouldn't want to be the elk on the other side of it, at any distance....

    But it sure was FUN!!!!

Cool looking rifle....what do you hunt with it? What's recoil like compared to 308 or 30.06?

I haven't hunted with this one I've carried my other .458 rifles bear hunting. With the muzzle brake the recoil is like about a 30-06 while shooting Hornady .458 factory ammo.

What was the donor action originally? I might have to consider building a Savage like that. Very cool.

I'm currently looking for a donor rifle to swap a 35 whelen barrel on. Just need to find a beater 110, since I'm probably scrapping everything but the action.
