Dan Wesson specialist in stainless. Don't own one, but they are just crafted extremely well. Fit, trigger pull, etc.

What features are you looking for? 45 ACP? Ambi safety? Checkering? Adjustable sights? Lots of variable.

My blanket answer would be Springfield TRP. However, you can find Dan Wesson 1911s for less than $1500 and they're great guns, too.

Dan Wesson for the over 1k price tag market and Springfield for under 1k price I think are your best choices.

I have a TRP that's been chugging along reliably for about 10 years, but if I was in the market for a mid price range 1911 today, it'd be from the Dan Wesson line. Probably a Valor for full size or V-Bob for Commander.

The TRP & Dan Wesson Valor are roughly in the same price range, but Springfield uses MIM parts for some internal & fire control parts, while Dan Wessons have internals of tool steel. The internet "experts" on the 1911 forums all agree that MIM parts are inferior in strength to tool steel machined parts. While I've never personally had a MIM part fail, given the choice, I'll take tool steel any day.

When my TRP arrived, the first thing I did before even going to the range was replace the full length guide rod with a Wilson GI style guide rod, spring & plug; because....well....I just hate those damn things. With that "problem" solved & after a few hundred rounds, it became my carry gun for years, (until my Wilson CQB came along.) While I don't personally own a DW, the ones that I've handled all seem to have a slightly better fit & finish than my TRP, and the slide action is smoother out of the box. In addition to all that, the Dan Wessons don't use the sides of their slides as a gigantic billboard.

    Why ?

    Fit, finish and looks.

That's about all you really get with a higher price tag in the simplest of terms.

I have $400 1911's that will shoot just as well as a $1500 one and will last just as long.

And trigger pull is subjective. I have a $1800 STI that needed a trigger job just the same as a $500 Rock Island Armory. I thought both triggers sucked. If they dont break at 2 or 2.5lbs they get a trigger job.

    YMMV.
