I've owned Taurus, Springfield and Ruger 1911s.
Ultimately, I got rid of the Taurus and Springfield, and kept the Rugers. I have both a full size and Light Weight Commander, both in .45. Great quality for a decent price.
Sig Sauer also makes a good 1911 for the money. If I wasn't happy with my Rugers, I'd buy a Sig.

Burke's gun shop in Laceville PA, right on Route 6, has a NICE Sig Sauer "We The People" 1911 on sale with 250 rounds of FMJ for $1200

I will echo all the Dan Wesson fans in here. I have a specialist in 45acp, and love it. They already come with great grips, and straight 8 sights. The grips are a bit aggressive, and I’ve heard complaints about being too aggressive, but that has not been the case for me.
