I got the PA and Utah with, what was at the time, a 5 year old simple assault. (m2 or m3 I can't remember)
I too was worried about the character clause, even went and talked with an attorney beforehand who chuckled and said, I had nothing to worry about and that if I did have a problem then contact him. I went in to the Allegheny sheriffs office and walked out with a new one in the same amount of time that it took my two friends to renew theirs on the same trip there. That was a long time ago and I haven't had any issue since.

In order to get intelligent answers you must speak intelligently.

Local cops or county sheriff could still disqualify you because you have proven a predisposition to violence. Philly does it all the time.

The age of the conviction doesn't matter. ...they don't go away unless they are expunged, a conviction is for life unless pardoned. Convictions generally cannot be expunged without a pardon. Sealed records are still, just not viewable by the public.

M3 Mutual Combat Simple Assault shouldn't be a prohibitor by law, but the sheriff can evoke the character clause.

The policy that last couple decades has been to arrest both, aggressor and victim, then punish the victim more than the aggressor. (seriously, I've seen it happen a number of times)

Mutual combatants are pretty much treated equally.
