They are designed to direct the blast forward - downrange.

    Lots of companies make them.
Here's a KAW Valley brand on an AR15. Note the holes are all in the face.

Muzzle brakes are not your friend if you are wary of noise.

But, I agree, my 556 stuff is incredibly loud for what it is.

Install an Indian Creek BFD. Works great at redirecting muzzle blast and noise forward. It's removable for when you want full use of your brake.

Exactly. Supersonic rounds out of carbine length barrels - like the AR platforms and Mini 14's - tend to be loud. Not really much you can do.

I'm not so sure. I've owned and fired both , and the Mini does sound , different.

On another subject, ya can just point the ejection path toward anyone who tries to sneak up on you. Those fired casings come out hot and a-hellin'!

Mine throws the empties forward. As far as being hot, my 1st semi was a 742 in '06. Empty came out and was spinning on bench, so I grabbed it to prevent it from falling. IMMEDIATE blister on finger, FIL asked if it was heavy.

Hi, you sure can buy one that’ll screw on.
We’re General Arms in Pottstown and have threaded many barrels when needed.
Some brakes are better than others for this purpose.
If you contact Holland. They make their own and are the best.
