The same Ronald Reagan that signed a bill infringing on your right to own a new machine gun.

And then he signed the Hughes Amendment making full autos almost impossible for the average blue collar guy to own banning machine guns manufactured after 86.

Yep.... Same Ronald Reagan..... His words in this speech should be remembered fondly and should be repeated. Just as his actions that you mention should also be remembered with disdain and learned from.

So you're both going to ignore that that was a poison pill slipped into a law that allowed milsurp rifles to be imported again and got rid of the requirement to sign a log book when buying handgun ammo?

HR4332 was already set to pass and move onto Regan when it was thrown in there unexpectedly at the very end. The amendment apparently failed a voice vote but Democrats somehow got it added to the bill anyway. Regan was supposed to Veto it per the NRA but apparently they all forgot when that time came.

I don't hold Regan up in overall ill regard over this but from what I have read it was complete bull shit and would have had nothing to do with the outcome of the rest of the bill.

I was 11 years old when this happened.

Reagan heavily endorsed Clinton's "assault weapons ban" . He start his presidential career pro gun but ended it anti second amendment.

Check this video out and see if your attitude changes.

YUP apparently he or who ever his Alzheimer's handlers were at that time were big fans of Bubba.

It's too bad they didn't try and bargain with Clinton for national reciprocity.

On May 3, 1994, Ronald Reagan and two other former presidents sent a letter to House members, urging them to support a controversial ban on lethal, military-style assault weapons. At the time, President Clinton was battling Republicans, conservative Democrats and the NRA to pass a bill barring many semiautomatic rifles.

Clinton needed all the help he could get it. He got it from Reagan, who still carried great weight in the Republican Party, as well as Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. Their letter, in part, read:

This is a matter of vital importance to the public safety. While we recognize that assault weapon legislation will not stop all assault weapon crime, statistics prove that we can dry up the supply of these guns, making them less accessible to criminals. We urge you to listen to the American public and to the law enforcement community and support a ban on the further manufacture of these weapons.

The letter bearing their signatures made news. The Los Angeles Times reprinted the entire document, with the headline: “Plea From 3 Ex-Presidents.” (Noticeably absent: former president George H.W. Bush.)

Looking at HR4332 as it was 1st entered it appears one of its original intents was to remove suppressors from the NFA but that was kicked off rather fast.

I do see where under 1K rounds of ammo purchased no longer required signature but I don't see much about the importation of surplus rifles other then banning the import of barrels on already banned imported guns.

Its late, I'm tired so maybe I'm missing something.

All in know is that even if we gained something in the end we still lost just as much because we ain't never getting anything back.
