Generalizing that, I would say mindset above all.

You have to have the mindset to do what it takes in any situation, including the one quoted above.

It's the single biggest takeaway from my experience at Parris Island in '72.

The biggest drama I anticipate is life without Burger King. I'll shoot a bastard for a whopper with cheese

Yeah yeah yeah. But a fat guy who can improvise in a shtf situation will out live a guy who can only pick things up and put them down.

Another great skill to have is to keep your mouth shut before such a situation... you don't want folks knowing if you have a pantry, supplies, or have even considered such a scenario, UNLESS, they are close to you and like minded (which, if you have a group like that, is a good prep).

One of my favorite lines I've seen is someone on a discussion board saying that their friends/family/whatever "when SHTF, I'm coming to your place". Answered with "That's a long way to come to die in my driveway".

As said prior, go dark. If you do venture out, don't be in your "North Face" bests after the first week; look disheveled/average.

i know which type i am and i don't do sandals.

This is why one should have the basic necessities for their family for a year maybe longer. No one said you had to be Jesus but there is no reason to be a murderous shit head either that has to take from someone else simply because you chose to be unprepared. The raiders are the reasons why so many prepare and have firearms so your plans may just be very short lived.
