Re: My First Deer
Nice job! The first one is always memorable. Do yourself a favor and start a hunting journal. I did back in 2009. Reading through instantly transports me back to the hunt. In that short time, I have killed my biggest buck, lost some hunting partners to the great big range in the sky, watched my oldest kill her first deer, great wildlife encounters that the anti crowd will never understand, and countless other memories with good friends. It's amazing what a few notes jotted down in a small reporter's notebook can jar loose in this brain of mine. It also helps with tracking deer movements over the years. A friend and I were comparing notebooks at camp. Both of us have killed our best bucks on days other than opening day. We have also killed the majority of our bucks between 10AM and 2PM. That goes for both rifle and archery. Also, a larger portion of deer were killed during poor weather. That tells me three things. If I can't get out at first light or stay till dark, it's still worth going out. Maybe even more importantly during rifle season to pack a lunch or nibble on snacks throughout the day. Get rain gear or a tree umbrella and stay out in the rain.
