    Default Failure-to-Fire Ammo Question

    Hello all,

I put a total of 900 rounds of .38 Special through a .357 SP101 and out of 250 rounds of Prvi Partizan I had two failure-to-fire (FTF).

I purposely ran an extra 650 rounds of the brands below (with counts) through it to make sure it wasn’t a reliability issue and had zero FTFs. I also attached pics of casings. The circled ones are Prvi Partizan and the one I point to is one of the FTFs.

Ok, here’s the question, given that the two FTFs were with Prvi Partizan, you guys think it’s an ammo issue? I’m not too worried about two FTF’s out of 900 if it’s a light strike issue with the gun, but wanted to get your take on it. I’m thinking it’s an ammo issue given it ran perfect with the other brands.

250 rounds of Prvi Partizan - 2 FTFs
300 rounds of Federal Target & Range - zero FTFs
100 rounds of Hornady American Gunner - zero FTFs
250 rounds of Speer Gold Dot - zero FTFs

IMO a ammo issue, slightly harder primers or lack of quality control. If this is a range gun why worry about it. If using weapon as a carry piece stay with the reliable brands for carry. Not to be something to cause concern. Happy shooting.

I seem to remember discussion that Privi primers tend to be on the hard side. Pictures are a bit small for evaluation, but it does look like a light strike, like the primer was not fully seated and the impact seated and failed to ignite. Did you try the two bad ones a second time? Other than that, I agree with red dog.

Am I the only one to notice those hammer strikes are off-center? While the ammo may be slightly sub-standard, your pistol might need some adjustment.

    Use quality ammo.
If the problem continues have the gun looked at by a qualified gunsmith.

The off center hits are a timing problem.
If you are pulling the trigger at top speed, the gun can cycle past the bolt stop and off center hit or miss.
It's not supposed to do that- no matter how hard you pull the trigger. Gun should get checked out by a gunsmith or factory return.
Privi isn't real high quality ammo to begin with but I think they get a pass on this one.

Did you happen to run the two FTF through again and did they fire?
If they did consider a primer seating problem with the rounds.
I'd mark some rounds and go out and test noting cylinders and primer strikes.
I'd then contact Ruger with results. I've found them to be very good with customer service.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

AHA ! You have found the Holy Grail ? You now know that The Prvi Partisan is not 100 % reliable ! With that said the other ammo works flawlessley and the strike on the primer is not always going to be dead center but in most cases slightly off center,My S&Ws,Taurus and Colts all show the same similat pttern with no issues !

LOL! Not planning on buying any more Prvi Partisan! It's a shame 'cause it's so inexpensive. But I was able to get a case of Federal Target & Range as my new range ammo at a cheaper price. Speer Short Barrel is my go to carry ammo. Thank you all for your input and feedback. Much, much appreciated!!!
