I think it's more reasonable to think that the guy isn't going to cut you.

Especially when he tells you he just killed the only woman he ever loved and WANTS you to kill him now.

I'm not sure that "reasonable" applies to predicting the behavior of a deranged killer; even if he wants to die, that doesn't exclude him continuing to kill until police put him down. Most spree killers want to die, but that's scant comfort for the next of kin of those others who die in the process.

Just because a person is armed with a gun, doesn’t mean they are mentally or physically (or think they are legally) capable of using lethal force in a situation.

Your posted situation is a perfect example.

It is your killer instinct which must be harnessed if you expect to survive in combat. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill. You will become dead marines and then you will be in a world of shit because marines are not allowed to die without permission. Do you maggots understand?
