    Default damn gas company

Gas company has been sending me letters. zthey need to cpme in my house for a safety inspection. Meter is in the basement.

I ignored them for awhile until I get a shutoff notice.

My basement is mu reloading and gun room and I really don't want a stranger in there.

    I relent and they said between 8 and 4. I can't schedule a time.

I burn my last vacation day to stay home and meet them.

    The pricks don't show.

    I am extremely pissed.

Figure out the cost/value of your day - deduct it from your bill.

DEMAND THEY RELOCATE THE METER TO OUTDOORS WITHOUT COSTS. If need to, complain ot the PUC. It's for THEIR convenience. I've done quite a few with PECO.

I've never seen a house with the gas meter inside.

It isn't uncommon. I've seen water, power, and gas meters inside houses.

I worked with a guy who used to read some sort of meters in the city of Philtytown and he reported some pretty disgusting conditions.

My old hose has one. They wanted to move it out front, I told them no.
Its still in the basement closet where its been since the 50s. There is an advantage to it,
if you think about it, but.... dont do it

Tarps and a few screws from the wall are your friend. tarps are cheap and can be used for other things. A broken water line from the fridge caused water damage on two floors. I had to bring the adjuster through the damaged rooms. Out of site out of mind.

My old gas meter was in the basement and had the same exact problem as the OP. I had them remove the meter and shut the gas off at the curb. They had to bring a truck over to dig up the old valve just so they could shut it off. No more UGI for me...

A year or two after that, I got the exact same letter in the mail, that I needed my meter inspected. I told them they completely removed the meter, capped off the entrance pipe, and shut it off at the street. Nope, no good, they wanted to see it. I laughed at their threats to turn off the gas, until they said they would get the cops to let them in; public safety and all ().

I did what JustinR did; take a day off from work and covered everything up with old, painted up plastic. The UGI guy gets there and asks me where the meter is, I told him in one of the back of their guy's trucks. They took it with them when they removed it, but nobody ever seemed to follow up on it. I made sure this guy did. I haven't had natural gas in the house for the last decade or so.

The biggest thing I learned from the whole thing was that UGI has NO IDEA of what they are doing. It's a wonder that we only hear about 1 or 2 houses blowing up from gas leaks every other month and not far more.
