Default SBR Engraving, How To Finish?

Well guys...any day now I should see my paperwork come back for a Thompson SBR.

I've read many good things here about Laserworx in Pottstown and also have a local engraver as an option.

I assume that after the engraving is completed, I need to protect the engraved area from rusting. Is there a preferred manner, cold blue, paint, etc?

I'm thankful for your thoughts...and yes...I searched first.

(I'm not even getting into the discussion of whether or not it needs to be engraved. Some shops tell me no (unless you plan to sell) and others say yes. My thinking is that "yes" avoids any potential problems)

If you built it on a form 1 you are the maker/manufacturer and it needs to be engraved with the required info

If you bought it as a SBR and it transferred on a form 4 it is already good to go.

Sorry can't help with the rest

On AR lowers a product called Bircheood Casey Aluminum Black works great. I’m not sure if you Thompson would be made of the same thing though.

The Thompson I believe is steel, so a cold blue would probably be a good choice. I use Brownell's Oxpho-Blue.

You will need to remove the layer of oxide formed by the laser. Steel wool should clean it up, but use caution on a heavy hand with the steel wool on the bluing around the area. Then follow the directions of the Oxpho-blue

Small round wire brush also works. Then cold blue as others said.

I usually just color fill or aluminum black mine depending on material. If you want it blued to match follow directions above. If you want it color filled in white black red etc, then follow directions above and then fill with paint marker color of your choice and then wipe off any excess with a alcohol wipe after its gets somewhat tacky/dry.
