Selling a firearm
I am selling a firearm in Illinois. Are there any special things that I need to do to make it a legal sale?

Re: Selling a firearm
I would suggest that you contact a forum in Illinois...
Being that this forum is PA specific, most of us here can't advise you on another state's laws.

Re: Selling a firearm
A generic answer would be the special things you need to know would be IL gun laws.

Re: Selling a firearm
It honestly varies from state to state - Some states require all transfers go through an FFL, some states only require it for Pistols, some states don't require it at all.
PA, for example, requires that transfers of Pistols be completed at a FFL, but Long Guns (Shotguns, Rifles) can be transferred Face-to-Face with no paperwork. Though PA does have an exception for pistol transfers between Parent-Child, Grandparent-Child and Spouses.
The safest way to do it is to do to an FFL and have them do the transfer - but personally I'd research your local laws and find out what actually has to be done.

Private sales do not require a FFL but the 24 hr. hold on long guns and 72 hrs on pistols do. You are required to obtain his info. from the FOID card and keep this with the make model and s/n for 10 yrs. The info is really for your protection if the gun trace comes back to you.Courage is being scared to death--but saddling up any way. John Wayne
