    You might want to read this book. It has a rather detailed developmental history of the AK and I found it a rather credible account.

    Point of clarification; Mosin-Nagant is commonly and correctly shortened to "Mosin." "Nagant" commonly refers to revolvers designed by Emile and Leon Nagant in Belgium.
