Re: Competitor: 686, or 629?
I fired a .44 magnum once. Woodchucking with a friend. He asked if I'd like to try it. Sure! Wooden grips. Stung a bit. Palm side grip had become three pieces.

Re: Competitor: 686, or 629?
Seriously if you want a revolver esp. for competition your best bet is a S&W 625 or 325 (unless you stumble on a used 25-2) or a 627 Pro (unless you're playing by strict IDPA rules) 686 is a very good choice also. But be advised with the new S&W revolvers you'll probably need to send it for a trigger job.
BTW if you're talking about post WW II production Model 25 (.45 Colt) and Model 25-5 (.45 ACP), the bore dimensions are the same 0.452" groove. The only "problem" you might find with either or both is oversized chamber throats which might necessitate using bullets with a larger than standard diameter. BTW DucatiRon can supply them.

Re: Competitor: 686, or 629?
I'm not looking for a competition gun. To be honest, I just like the look, and added weight of the Competitor. I like the thicker look of that model specifically.
It was the 25-5. Long sold it. Thought to myself that I'll just eventually find a Model 25 later on. I was gonna send the gun in to S&W so they could convert it since they came out with the "Classic" line, but decided against it before I sold the gun.

You can shoot 44 specials out of a 44 magnum too if you want to tone things down for casual shooting. Then you have the best of both worlds.

I like my 686 357 2.5 barrel 7 shot, it's one of my favorite guns.

Welp. I just held a 629 Competitor today at a local shop. Love. 'Love' is all I can say to describe it. 'Need' is the only way I can explain it. 'Want' is the only way I require to justify it.
