Sounds like somebody needs to go out of business. Some people need to lose their homes. And there should soon be a lot of nice houses for sale at very nice prices.

Or a heckuva lot of squatters in them nice houses.

Now this CDS thing that I just read about.

#1 gave #2 money betting that a company would fail...if the said company fails #1 gets money in return. However the #2 has no money to cover the bet so #1 gets no money. Sounds like some legs should be broken.

You pretty much have the basics down, what you haven't noted is the huge amount of money we are dealing with AND the fact those "repackaged mortgages" are now so convoluted no one knows what they own. The money at risk here could very well outpace the US GDP (gross domestic product) ... and then of course lets add in the fact a lot of this crap paper was sold to China and other countries. These countries REFUSE to take a loss and have told our government if they do lose money thy will stop buying US debt, the same debt that keeps our economy afloat ... see the problem now (and why Washington is feverishly trying to bail this mess out?)

Lets say for instance China wakes up tomorrow with a bug up their ass and decides to dump all the US treasury notes they own ... its game over, the jig is up and the US is forced to declare bankruptcy.... in many ways its just that simple and just that scary.
