Default AR pistol for a child.

Have any of you guys built your kids an AR pistol instead of going through the natural progression of child, to youth then to full size rifles?

My son has been shooting since he was 4 using my daughter's pink Savage Rascal. He is going to be 7 and has excellent discipline when it comes to gun handling and safety. He wants his own rifle for his upcoming birthday in November and I have been thinking an AR pistol in .22lr would be something he would have forever and be able to grow with him over the years, and with the whole arm brace thing it makes it more practical for a small person.

I was thinking on a light weight configuration as shown in this video around the 6:30 Mark, but in .22lr for now.

I have a spare upper not doing anything and I considered building a .22lr upper for my SBR.

So I looked at some options from CMMG & TacSol for a barrel and BCG. I still have a spare upper not doing anything. I couldn't get past the prices and ended up getting the cmmg adapter for .223.

Also can't really beat the venerable 10/22 either. Would not get outgrown and even the standard LOP shouldn't be too big for him right now.

PSA has a 7” upper which goes on sale from time to time. If not I will get one of their light weight 5.56 10.5” uppers and put my CMMG conversion in it.

LOP is too big for him now and I’m sitting on a ton of AR parts and lowers that are doing nothing.

Here’s my 7 year old sitting down with a 15/22. Threw a small red dot on it and a dead air mask and she will sit there all day shooting. We’re not at the stand and shoot or run around and shoot stuff yet

Can you clarify exactly what you mean by this? I thought the current (illogical) legal opinion was:

    "Inadvertently" shouldered = legal
    Intentionally shouldered = illegal

If that's changed, I'm unaware, and I'd hesitate to put my kid into a legal gray area.

It is once again not illegal to touch a brace to your shoulder. ATF......

Thanks. I was unaware of that.

Greg, they changed it several months ago. Said, "shouldering the brace does not change the configuration of the firearm from a pistol to a rifle, so at this time by just shouldering the pistol with the brace does not make it a short barreled rifle" or words to that effect.

So as you know, they could change that "ruling" any time they want to.
