Re: AR pistol for a child.
my ar pistol kicks, i'd have given my son my carbine when he was younger because the comp pulls all the recoil out. more like a soft .22lr
maybe a pencil barrel to lighten the longer 16" would be a good idea. There is no way to make it out alive...

Re: AR pistol for a child.
My daughter is 11 and has been shooting since she was 4. I thought what you suggested would be a good idea also, but pistol length AR barrels produce a lot of blast in 5.56, which she did not like. She preferred my AMD.
I would recommend you buy a base level 10/22, put on a Blackhawk retractable stock, Tech Sights and buy some 15 round capacity magazines.
That's what has worked best for her and the adjustible stock allows the gun to grow with her.

Again the upper is going to be chambered in .22lr not .223 so blast and recoil shouldn't be an issue.

If you have the parts I think it could be a viable option. I think their are probably a little better ones out there for the money if you're starting from scratch.

Re: AR pistol for a child.
Maybe maybe not. I have owned several 10/22's they are good rifles but nothing special in my eyes, I think the 10/22 Charger would be a better option for him. He can already shoot from several different positions including offhand and has moved on from bench rested shooting.
However either of them will be at at least twice the cost if not more then the the AR since I have everything except for a barrel and a gas tube.
As far as reliability goes there are plenty of dedicated AR's on the market that have proven to run in this caliber.Join the GOA & save $5.00. https://www.gunowners.org/mac-subs-join-goa.htm

Re: AR pistol for a child.
I think youre pretty close to me. If you want to test drive a 15/22 and a couple 10/22s let me know. Iv3 got one 10/22 in a magpul backpacker stock and another in a Hightower armory ps90 stock. I can even bring out my ultralight ar15 if he can handle it
