Winchester '94 30-30 ballistics. peep sights
I went to the range yesterday to verify the sighting of my Winchester 94.
I felt it was shooting high at 50 yards and I went to adjust the sights. The rifle is fitted with a Williams FP-94/36 peep sight.
Of course, I dialed the wrong way, and decided to start from scratch, back at 25 yards.
Two shots were initially 3 inches high so I estimated the number of clicks and took a few more shots.
3 shots, touching eat other, about 1-3/4" above my point of aim. I'm happy with the grouping (off a bench rest).

(Point of aim was the bottom of the silhouette)
Shot a few at 50-yards and was happy with ok results (I forgot to take any pics of that target.
Moved back to 100-yards and I was still high. clicked down a few more. ended up with this

The top two were the first shots, then I adjusted down and took the next three. They are centered about 4.9" above my point of aim (6:00 hold on the black bullseye). I then aimed at the bottom of the orange area and it impacted about 4-1/2 high. Then I took two shots without the benchrest, those are the two to the right. Close together, but I guess I pulled on the trigger when I fired.
Shot a bunch at the 100-yard steel and missed none.
Had to leave the range as I was out of time and my shoulder was getting sore.
Question is this: How much more time and ammo should I expend trying to lower the point of impact? There are not many more clicks in the adjustment on the sight. I'm tempted to just leave well enough alone. Thinking that if I aim at or near the bottom of a deers chest, I'm going to get a solid hit at any range.
Your thoughts?

As long as you know where it is hitting you are GTG. I always sight-in deer rifles a little high. A good rule is a paper plate at 100 yds (open sights). Better if you can put them all in a small cake plate. The grouping is the important thing. And don't shoot out of you comfort range. If you can get it right-on, great. If not, hold lower.

I am pretty happy with the 100-yard grouping from a 54 year old rifle.
Those three just above the center bull are are inside of an inch.

If you're out of adjustment on the Williams and want it to shoot to point of aim at 100 yds, get a higher front sight.

Highly recommend Skinner sights. They have front sights too. I have the winged front and rear on a Marlin 1895SS 45/70. I replaced the Williams sight I was using because it seemed somewhat delicate when I was shooting my 300gr full bore handloads. Skinner has a good page on the front sights and getting them adjusted to your liking.

+1 on the Skinner sights. Lots of info on their site.
Have Skinner on a Marlin .44 and Williams on a 30/30 Winchester.
The advantage of the Williams is ease of adjustment for different loads.
For durability, and in my opinion, the looks of the Skinner can't be beat.It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Re: Winchester '94 30-30 ballistics. peep sights
The single MOST frustrating thing I have done in my life was helping my wife’s stepdad zero a scope on a Winchester 94. Top eject, so scope is offset. He is a good shot, so he is shooting all shots. Nothing gets us close to being on the ridiculously small targets he bought to use at 100 yards. I decide to have him shoot at a spot on the backstop berm so I can see dirt move and walk it in from there.
“ see that piece of wood just left of the third backstop upright support from the left ?” Put a shot into that. Nothing! “Again”. Nothing. Five shots, no dirt impacts. Stepdad is insistent on twisting dials on the scope each time he misses. Not one or two clicks, no, we are talking full spins of each dial.
Four boxes of ammo expended and some guy down at target 5 (we are at target 2) comes over and asks why we are shooting his target area. That’s when I discover stepdad has trouble differentiating right from left!
I still wind up cussing at the wall when I think of that day!
