I re inventoried about a week ago and was ticked at myself...was down below my recommended allotment of 9mm. I rectified that this morning...500 Federal 115 fmjs for $99.99 x a few.

I make it easy on myself. I have three calibers. They are sorted by caliber into large ammo cans. Just dumped in loose.

7.62x39 takes up about 50 large ammo cans.
9mm takes up about 40 large ammo cans.
.22LR takes up about 20 large ammo cans.

Due to their combined mass, they’re stored in basement on concrete floor, stacked up. No floor support issues.

    It's a good start.

From the post, I'm small potatoes, but labeled by caliber.

I store it loose in cans also, and put a box flap showing the date/lot in a zipper bag inside the can for detailed info. In the basement like you, stack 'em 5 high. If I had 5 cans...

I use 30 cal cans for it though. Easier to move around. They'll hold 500 of most rifle calibers and 1000 of most pistol calibers.

Cans marked with masking tape and Sharpie for caliber.

As soon as my safe is moved, I'm going to start down this path. First step, a spreadsheet recording ammo on hand by caliber and factory/reloads. Not going to bother with brands at this point. I have everything stored across 3 different shelving units now. I'm also not going to count every round. I'll estimate partial boxes. When dealing with the numbers I am, it's not important to me to have every single round accounted for.
