    Default Cabelas New Policy

(I did a search and didn't see anything about this....)

Today my wife and I made the 90 minute trip to Cabelas in Hamburg. We just thought it might be fun to go look around.

I saw a S&W 586 that I liked and asked for a closer look. The clerk ensured it was clear...and handed it to me. I wanted to feel the trigger, but there was a lock installed on the trigger. I asked how I could check it out with the lock on and if it could be removed. Ready for this?

The clerk told me that there was incident at one of their stores where a customer put a bullet into a gun he was being shown and committed suicide. (A terrible thing for sure)

From now on, every firearm has a trigger lock that goes with the gun. The store personnel are not allowed to remove them. You must buy the gun and you can check the action, trigger...whatever...once the gun leaves the store.

I nicely said that I couldn't consider buying a gun without the ability to try the trigger, etc. Another clerk said that he agreed and wouldn't buy a car without test driving. The staff suggested contacting corporate as they too didn't like this policy. I have to add that everyone was pleasant, polite, etc...this is not a reflection on the staff.

Obviously, I didn't buy anything and will contact corporate, although I'm sure it will make little difference. For better or worse...I have no reason to stop at Cabela's again. I have only bought one rifle from them, but it was a pleasant transaction.

WOW. A complete mess ever since they were bought by Bass Pro Shop. The sales that I see aren't really sales and they almost completely stopped discounting their ammo. I would buy 5-10 boxes of 50 Beowulf ammo about once 4/6 weeks because they put it on sale. It was only $1/box but it made me feel like I was getting a deal. Since the buy out, I haven't seen the stuff listed, much less on sale.

I would never consider buying a firearm without trying the trigger. That's gotta be the dumbest policy yet.

Years ago there was a sugarmans not far from me. A customer asked to see a gun. Pulled a round out of his pocket and committed suicide with the gun.

I would think if it had happened at Cabela's we might have heard about it

The only thing I could find about a suicide is a suicide on the parking lot of a Cabela's. But I did find this little tidbit. Seems someone stole 24 firearms from a Cabela's in December 2017. Could this be the reason?????

I seem to recall that the clerk told me it happened in the Midwest....but I could be wrong.

As they explained it, the policy came into being this week.

While speaking with some of the staff...all of which agreed that it's a bad policy...I commented that perhaps a customer and clerk could go into another room to remove the lock....and that's when they told me that its corporate policy that the locks leave without the gun.

A bit off topic...but we looked at ammo prices too and they're sale prices are higher that some local regular prices...

I see no reason to keep my Cabelas credit card, ether.

I suppose to the good....it'll help the local dealers...

This one happened at a Bass Pro Shop recently in KS. Since the merger of the two maybe Bass Pro is setting the rules.

What clerk would allow any customer to load a firearm in front of them?
