Never Never Never shoot someone else's reloads!!!

Two weeks ago I picked up 400 + of reloaded 45LC rounds , 150 + empty 45LC cases, Hornady Nitride Dies in 45LC, and several thousand bullets mostly XTPs from an estate sale. The late owner was quite old when he passed.

Last weekend I had time to pull the bullets from the cases. One box of 50 loaded 45LC had a note that said Rifle Only. I discovered 5 of those 50 rounds had no powder in the cases when I separated the bullets from the cases. The rest 350 + loaded 45LC rounds averaged 1 out of 25 rounds to be missing powder. One other disturbing detail was the amount of powder missing in some of the cases. Most cases were 1/2 full of a flake powder. I found many cases to have a 1/4 of a case of the same flake powder in them.

I also found ball powder and a stick powder in a few loaded cases.

I do believe if someone had fired this 45LC ammunition in their rifle or pistol that there would of been an accident.

I've gotten reloaded ammo from estate sales just for components and some people shouldn't have access to opposable thumbs after breaking it down and measuring just whats inside.

I won't shoot anyone else's reloads for safety reasons, and I won't let anyone shoot mine for liability reasons.

Ammo failures, either squibs or over-pressure loads, are more likely to cause catastrophic injury than a poorly maintained car engine.

And, ammo is a one-use item. I can determine from multiple takeoffs and landings that the plane is likely to work the next time, but I have no way of knowing if that one round came from the lot that was done right or the lot that was run at 02:00 on Jan 1.

I'll ride in someone's Boeing or Airbus, not so much in their bi-plane or crop duster.

Not the point of my post. We are discussing how reloads by another brings up the possibility that the other made mistakes which could lead to injury or death. Likewise, a pilot or a driver can make mistakes.

We evaluate friends and family members abilities and assess the risk of riding with them. Generally, a driver with no accidents and who demonstrates good judgment over a period of time is regarded safe. Why that does not apply to a reloader seems a bit out of kilter. Don't trust ammo by an unknown....sure. Understandable. Shooting with a reloader for an appreciable time failing to engender confidence is questionable to me.
