That was a horribly written story. He screwed up by letting them in in the first place.

Old news, some time ago. And he didn't let them in, his wife did. Then she called him.

IIRC (without going and digging up the other articles on it) it was his wife that let the cops in, not him.
Which reminds me, I need to impress THAT on both the wife AND the kid again... DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR FOR THE POLICE! (unless of course you called for them, because something bad happened.)

his 13-year-old son had made a comment at school about the Millstone Middle School's security, and the officers wanted to confiscate Cottrell's firearms as part of an investigation.

I wonder what the kid said that prompted all of this.

Just because it happened awhile ago, doesn't mean it didn't happen. We need long memories and constant reminders to stay vigilant

Apologies, I just saw the piece and thought it was new. I bet next time it happens, Murphy's State Police will have orders to use extreme force to obtain compliance.

the kid, effectively, commented that the "security" they were implementing was, for lack of a better term, bullshit. that of course raised the ire of the powers that be, eventually.

for the record, I've said the exact same thing to multiple people about the "security" they've put in at schools all around NJ. none of them are anything more than kabuki theater at best. your average 1970s or 1980s truck is stronger than the doors and frames they've put in, and that's if you want to take the "brute force" approach. there are other far softer methods of gaining access to a school for nefarious purposes. people seem to be shocked that someone would think of doing some of the things I've mentioned as possible. "sheep" is far too nice a word for these total wastes of precious planetary consumables.
