Default Pa. bills would require safe gun storage

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - A Pennsylvania lawmaker has introduced legislation that would require the safe storage of firearms.

State Rep. Helen Tai (D-Bucks) said her package of bills also would require owners to report lost or stolen guns within 24 hours.

One bill would require owners to lock guns when not carried or in use, either in a safe or a box or by using a locking mechanism installed on the gun or incorporated into its design.

Another bill would require owners to lock guns when they live with someone who is banned from possessing a firearm.

Tai was joined in introducing the bills by the families of four young men murdered in 2017 by Cosmo DiNardo. The 21-year-old Bucks County man is serving four life sentences for killing and burying the men on a family farm.

Prosecutors in the case said DiNardo’s parents allowed him access to guns but couldn't be held accountable under Pennsylvania law. DiNardo couldn't have guns because of an involuntary mental health commitment.

I agree that if you live with a prohibited person, you should do your duty to keep guns out of their hands, but it should be left to the owner's personal responsibility, not a government mandate.

There's a point where securing your guns too well is going to get your family killed when someone breaks in. They're useless if you can't get to them in time.

Me too, I'll take mine with a portrait of Dana painted on the front.

But I'm still keeping a gun where I can get to it.
