Defensive shoot, give aid to attacker?
Have looked around but found no definitive answer.
You're involved in using your weapon to defend yourself.
Attacker is down badly injured.
Should you render aid until medics arrive?
Kicker is you have background and mucho experience in advanced trauma care.It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Re: Defensive shoot, give aid to attacker?
Do you have to by Law? Probably not, but it sure would look good for you if you did especially if you know what your doing.
Every situation is it’s own unique set of circumstances so there really cannot be a set rule for this.Last edited by Hodgie; July 30th, 2018 at 07:20 PM.

Re: Defensive shoot, give aid to attacker?
My goal wouldn't be to kill someone, it would be to stop a threat. Aside from calling 911, I don't know what I'd do. I might try to help him, or I might just say "fuck you for forcing me to do that".

Re: Defensive shoot, give aid to attacker?
Fuck that perp! I ain't rendering aid. I'll continue to cover him with my muzzle.
I sure as hell don't carry sterile gloves on me"It seems that the Constitution is more or less guidelines than actual rules"

"Should you render aid until medics arrive?"
From a tactical/defensive training point of view; NO. Why would you close within arms reach of a violent aggressor who just tried to kill you or someone you love? Do you know FOR SURE, that he is incapacitated beyond a point where he can still attack you? What if he over powers you and gets your weapon, kills you then your loved ones?
As a police officer at my agency, we trained to not approach a downed suspect after such an incident until we had a cover officer. The contact officer would move up under the cover officer's protection and handcuff the down suspect. When the medics arrived they would do their job.
As a civilian - rendering aid to a down suspect who just tried to kill you or other innocents would be : Pick up a phone, ask for police and medics.
Of course, one can do what he/she wants to do...Tomorrow's battle is won during today's practice.

Re: Defensive shoot, give aid to attacker?
I think it's ok to render aid, but first you should take 45 minutes to an hour for your nerves to settle so you can think clearly upon your first aid training.

Re: Defensive shoot, give aid to attacker?
I wouldn't help and I'd be slow to call for help. There's more to it than just that moment. Who's going to pay for his care? How much more is he/she going to cost society? What are they going to do to whom in the future? It's unlikely that this perp is a once and done.

How do you give them CPR when all that is left are two ankles and feet after hitting them with a 45ACP?

Re: Defensive shoot, give aid to attacker?
No I would not render aid. Not in a one on one encounter. You don't know if the person is playing Opossum or not. If other circumstances allowed for first aid by another, I would not stop them if it were safe to do so.
