My fav so far is the TSA / Airplane argument.

The same asshole fear mongering press that created such a stink over the TSA body scanners years ago that leave NOTHING to the imagination are now the same twitwhits claiming you can get a printed plastic gun past TSA and their scanners then onto a plane.

The plastic guns still have at least a metal firing pin and bullets thus wont even make it past an old school metal detector.

Anybody who has ever forgotten to remove so much as a plastic pocket comb from their back pocket gets a little TSA foreplay in front of their family, friends, and horny onlookers.

I just had a good friend of mine that does forensics for another state's AG office ask me what I thought about this whole debacle. Apparently they contacted him about the possibility of being able to forensically link a "ghost gun" to a certain printer. It just isn't possible, there's too much variation from one print to another. No 3D printer is exactly, even on two of the same object printed during the same session. There aren't tool marks that can be discerned.

The government is going to waste millions on chasing this down.

They can do it with laser printers...sort of:

They've also conned certain makers of graphics imaging software (such as Photoshop) into not letting such programs work with money.

No reason why they couldn't do something similar with 3d printers. Just pass legislation that requires such printers to X, Y or Z or not X, not Y or not Z, with respect to processing or printing things that fit certain patterns and/or create a tracking mechanism when building such models - and require licensing and registration of 3D printers, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. Hell, it could just declare all such printers as NFA items - subject to all rules thereof. I can easily see them being classified as AOW.

When it comes to government, if it wants tyranny, there is a way for it to get it.
