Black Powder / Muzzleloader Classes?

Wondering if anyone knew of an instructor or classes for learning the basics of black powder shooting, especially in Northeast PA but am willing to travel to learn something a bit more niche than shooting modern arms.

Unfortunately I don’t know any muzzleloader shooters but as a history guy I’ve always been drawn towards the historic.

See this thread: http://forum.pafoa.org/showthread.php?t=337589 on Dixon's Gunmakers fair. On Friday from 3PM-4PM there is a free seminar entitled: Hunting in PA with a The Flintlock Rifle. If you cannot make the seminar, just a visit to the fair will get you a chance to see a lot of blackpowder and historical stuff. You might be able to find a mentor there as well. There are going to be a lot of subject matter experts in all kinds of stuff related to living in the 1700s -1800s and in making and shooting black powder guns. It is not that far away as well.

The PA Federation of Black Powder Shooters and the National Muzzleloading Rifle Association usually has folks here and they should be able to hook you up!

Do you know what you want to learn about. Silly question I know. Black powder can be cartridge like 45-70 or cartridge like paper, it can be breach loaded or muzzle loaded, percussion or flint, nobody I know uses match.

I could help you with flintlock, percussion muzzleloader and cap and ball revolvers.

Cleaning is the pain in the butt that makes the difference. You need to clean the guns thoroughly right away or the will rust and it involves soap and water. It’s not like oh I’ll get that tomorrow. If humidity is over 50% the residual stuff will suck the water out of the air and attack the metal.

That’s actually exactly what I want to learn about, the more traditional side - mostly flintlocks and percussion cap muzzleloaders as well as cap and ball revolvers.

No worries about cleaning, I’ve done my share of milsurps with corrosive ammo.

There were two BP Martini-Henry's in .577/450 at the PAFOA Jersey Shore shoot just a couple of weeks ago. Come next year and bring your BP stuff too! We had fun...

There are BP clubs with historic actors.. look them up.. usually have some top notch BP experts..
